Kathivannoor Veeran
Kathivannoor Veeran:
The saga of an ordinary person 'Mandappan' who hail from Mangatt, in Kannur district later transformed into a God and being performed as a Theyyam widely known as Kathivanoor Veeran.
Mandappan was born to Kumarappan and Chakki in a Thiyya household. The naughtiness of Mandappan led him to be a persistent headache for the family.
As a result of this unruly behavior, Mandappan was forced to exile and travel towards the Kodagu (Coorg) region. Though he had set out along with friends, they intoxicated him and thus Mannappan was set alone. Mandappan, with the help of a girl Chemmarathy found his close relative in Coorg and got settled there.
As time progressed, Mandappan started farming, mastered Kalarippayattu and grew into an able youth. When it was time for marriage, he decided to marry Chemmarathi whom he had met on his way to Coorg. Mannappan used to travel long distances to pursue the farming jobs he had. Chemmarathy used to argue with her husband when he came home late nights.
One day warriors in Kodagu area waged a war on the Malayali population. Chemmarathy challenged Mandappan to fight the warriors in a sarcastic tone. She openly announced that Mandappan would not be able to survive a battle. Mandappan was an able warrior and could not stand this humiliation. He set out for the war. Though bad omens already started showing up right from the time he set out, he continued his way to the battle field.
Mandappan fought with all his expertise and prowess and the enemies subsequently fled. On his way back, he found that one of his fingers and ring were lost in the battle field. Losing them was a disgrace, a smash for his pride.
Mandappan returned to battle field to fetch the lost finger and ring. Kodagu warriors were hiding in the battle field and they adopted unfair means to end Mandappan. He was killed in the battle field in an unethical manner, in total disregard to the rules of Kalarippayattu.
Mandappan’s relatives gathered and decided to burn him in the graveyard. Chemmarathy who could not bear the demise of his beloved one, gave her life on the pyre, along with Mandappan.
